Web sites – Multilingual Help Page
People around the world can get your website in
there own language with a Multilingual Web sites.
If your computer has an old operating system or browser, you may see strange characters (empty rectangles or vertical bars) on a few of these pages. Here are guidelines on what you need to upgrade.
If you are using:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or below on Windows
- Windows 95 or NT4
- or a version of Mac OS before Mac OS-X
then you may need to upgrade your operating system or browser (see below for how to upgrade Internet Explorer) to view these pages properly.
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher on a PC with Windows 98 or higher, you will normally only need to install a Unicode font that contains the missing characters - see below. (The Unicode standard used to encode foreign characters was not fully supported in the fonts distributed with older versions of Microsoft Windows.)
You may not be able to view the pages properly in non-standard browsers. We recommend:
- Safari for the Apple Mac
- Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox or Mozilla for Microsoft Windows
Windows 2000, ME and 98
You may need to install a Unicode font to allow characters from certain languages (e.g. Chinese and Japanese) to display. Please note that installations are carried out at your own risk.
Microsoft Office 2000 and Office XP contain an Arial Unicode font which when installed will normally cause these characters to display properly. Installation instructions for the font are as follows (please note that on some computers you may not have the necessary permissions and will have to request that your IT department does this - also, details may vary on different versions of the software):
Click Start, Settings, then Control Panel. In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs. Try one of the following.
In Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME):
On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Office (or Microsoft Word), and then Add/Remove.
In Microsoft Windows 2000:
Click Change or Remove Programs, then Microsoft Office (or Microsoft Word), and then Change.
In the Features to install window, click Next. Click to expand Office Shared Features. Click to expand International Support. Click the icon next to Universal Font, and then click Run all from My computer on the shortcut menu. Click Update to complete the installation of the Universal Font (Arial Unicode MS) to your computer.
Upgrading Internet Explorer (Windows)
If you are using a version of Internet Explorer older than version 5.5 then you will need to update it. Please note that upgrades are carried out at your own risk. To find out which version you are using select Help, About Internet Explorer. The easiest way to upgrade is by using the Windows Update option in your Start menu, alternatively you could go to the Windows Update site or try the Internet Explorer Downloads site. Please note that the downloads involved can be large and may be very slow if you are using a dialup connection to the internet.
Internet Explorer Chinese Character Support
If you are installing Internet Explorer 6, check the option for Chinese Text Display Support and Language Auto-Selection. If you already have Internet Explorer 6 installed and you are not sure if you installed Chinese Text Display Support, you can use the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel to add it - select Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, click Add/Remove, click Add a Component and select Chinese Text Display Support and Language Auto-Selection.
